Why Play Matters for Young Kids

For young children, play is how they learn about the world and about themselves. Active play in particular builds skills that carry into everyday life.

Climbing and balancing help develop coordination, strength and body awareness. Working out how to get to the top of a play frame is also a small lesson in problem solving and persistence.

Playing alongside other children teaches turn-taking, sharing and communication. Even toddlers who play side by side are picking up social cues from the kids around them.

Most of all, free play gives children a chance to follow their own ideas. You do not need to direct every moment; a safe space and a little encouragement are often all they need.
